In The Solution: Conquer Your Fear, Control Your Future, Lucinda Bassett encourages self-exploration without judgment to help create a productive action plan. She begins with examining her own “core story,” encouraging others to do the same.
Part 1 of The Solution Deals with Core Stories
Bassett explains how dealing with core stories helps to overcome negative self-destructive patterns. For example, messages received in childhood might still hold people back. If someone’s parent does not manage stress well, chances are he/she won’t learn how to handle stress productively either. This core story is not used as an excuse for future failure, but rather an empowering tool to make the most out of individual strengths.
Benefits of Negative Characteristics
Chapter 3 in The Solution is all about worriers and the benefits of being one. Worriers make good goal setters and planners, so they can accomplish much if they refocus their energy into action. There is a five-step plan included in this chapter to reverse worry.
Fears and Self-Sabotage
The Solution examines why people may hang onto their self-destructive fears. Fears may cause individuals to sabotage their own success, but fears can also motivate people to improve. Some fears that keep people stuck include: fear of failure, fear of success, perfectionism and the fear of changing present relationships. Perfectionism and fear of failure are often the same thing because perfectionists may put off completing tasks for fear of them not being good enough.
The Art of Healthy Detachment
This is an interesting chapter that encourages people to let go of unhealthy and/or overly dependent relationships. Healthy detachment doesn’t mean that people should strive to be completely independent, so it gets tricky. Bassett points out that it is possible to be detached and compassionate at the same time.
Other Issues Lucinda Bassett Deals With in The Solution:
- Lifelong Security: This chapter deals with hang-ups over money and how to improve financial satisfaction.
- Action Plan: This is probably the most important part of The Solution, as self-examination on its own doesn’t accomplish much. However, by defining dreams and giving them a timeline, they’re more easily achieved.
- Power Thinking: There are clear steps toward becoming a power thinker, including examples of positive replacements for negative thoughts.
Throughout the chapters there are also 21 pro-action assignments with the suggestion to work on one a day until they’re all completed. In this way, The Solution (Sterling Publishing, 2011,
