There's something comforting about easy old-fashioned apple desserts because recipes have been passed down for generations.

Apples are popular throughout the year because they’re portable, plentiful and nutritious. They are particularly popular in the fall when they’re fresh and in season. Of course the fresher the apples, the better the dessert will taste.

What type of apple to use depends on personal preference. Granny Smith and Macintosh are tart, but popular for baked apple deserts. There’s no rule that’s written in stone about what type of apple to use, so if the family’s favorite are delicious apples, go for it!

For one of the easiest apple recipe desserts, try baked apples.

Easy Baked Apples

Ingredients:

  • 2½ ml (½ tsp.) butter per apple
  • 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of brown sugar
  • 5 to 7 raisins
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Wash and core the apple to get rid of the seeds.
  2. Combine sugar, butter and raisins together and then insert this into the apple core cavity.
  3. Place apples on to a foil lined pan and then sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. The foil will help catch the mess from the baked apples.
  4. Repeat this until there are enough baked apples for everyone.
  5. Bake at 200 C (400 F) in oven for about 35 minutes.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with these by adding other dried fruit like cranberries, or nuts such as walnuts. If time or ingredients are lacking, apples are quite good simply baked with maple syrup poured over them.

Baked apples are the perfect dessert for a cold night around the fire. For a camping version, wrap the apples in foil and place them carefully on the coals. Use metal tongs to retrieve them, wait for them to cool and enjoy!

Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 7 to 8 large apples
  • 250 ml (1 cup) of flour
  • 250 ml (1 cup) of brown sugar
  • 125 ml (½ cup) of butter
  • 7 ml (1½ tsp.) cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius (375 Fahrenheit)
  2. Peel, core and cut apples into pie size slices. Granny smith or Macintosh apples are good choices because the brown sugar doesn't overpower them.
  3. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning and toss apple pieces around.
  4. Combine flour, butter, cinnamon and sugar with hands or pastry cutter until mixture is crumbly and butter is in pea sized pieces. Add this mixture evenly over the apples in the pan.
  5. Bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly. Serves six.

Apple crisp is so scrumptious with vanilla ice cream! Some people like oatmeal in their apple crisp. If this is the case, simply add half a cup of oatmeal and a couple more spoonfuls of butter.

Apple Raisin Muffins

For another apple dessert idea, try making apple muffins. Just chop one apple into bite size pieces and add half a cup (125 ml) of raisins and one teaspoon (5 ml) of cinnamon to a plain muffin recipe. These are tender yet tough, so are perfect for school lunches! See Fun Food for Kids for more ideas.
